free comic book day haul
Jul. 4th, 2004 12:06 amNeither the Keenspot nor Keenspace book, alas. But I got to choose six, at Outer Limits! (Was going to swing by Million Year Picnic later, but ended up staying at a social gathering instead...who would have thought... very nice gathering, too.)
Star Wars:Clone Wars Adventures - nice standalone about the green Jedi chicks from the cartoon, in the cartoon style. I like the clear, straightforward art. And them Jedi ladies are cute.
The Dork Storm sampler - apparently a PS238 collection is supposed to be out, so maybe I will finally succeed in locating and purchasing a manifestation of this comic. The story here only encouraged me. Not sure the very simple art of Dork Tower comes off well in print.
Slave Labor Stories - Not surprisingly, I like Serenity Rose (which I buy - and they had #1 in, too, yay, so now my collection is complete) way more than their other titles, although Street Angel looks like it could be interesting (some fun ninja-bashing here). A lot of the other stories had ugly-drawn characters. I think I've maybe said this before, that "attractive" characters are one of the things I tend to like in a comic (where that includes cute cartoon-critters like in Bone, not just pretty Ranma characters and the like, but no jagged or unnaturally asymmetric faces like in some of these indie comics).
Superman:the 10cent adventure - Thought I should get some men in tights in here somewhere ::grin::. Nice balance of humor, action, and theme.
Dungeons and Dragons:An Adventurers Guide to D&D - Given my interest in campaign illustration, I had to pick this one up. Something weird about the coloring... can't quite put my finger on it, maybe the tones aren't quite right. Everyone looks undead or something. And that's the players. Well, at least the actual undead (when they get into the game section) look *more* undead. Dang, they got a lot done in one session. Talk about fantasy. ::grin::
(ETA) and the whole reason I was making this post...
Tokyopop Sneaks. Okay, maybe it's just me, but most of the manga in here... sucks. Either it's totally unclear who's who and what's going on, or the storyline appears to be the most overwrought melodrama (I do not want to hear the words "angels and demons" again, nor see anything that "appeals to fans of gothic culture" (except Serenity Rose, I suppose), and nothing. ever. should be titled "Eerie Queerie".). I mean, okay, it sucks at about the same average rate as everything else (90% ::grin::) but that doesn't reduce the inherent actual suckage.
I feel that perhaps there's a more interesting conversation to be had here about whether the fact that when "she's an artist who lives to paint; he's a vampire who models to live" I can't tell which of them that is in the picture (does the extreme androgeny/ambiguity/deliberate crossdressing of many of the characters limit my identification/engagement with them?). But I'd need to think about various possible counterexamples more carefully; maybe another post.
