Fic Post (Huge)
Dec. 14th, 2010 12:18 pmI'm still participating in that
abc_las challenge thingy, and I've put my stories from the last two rounds up at the AO3:
Out, in which Amber deals with class issues, and Lost and Found, concerning Alistair and the affair of the necklace. Both PG and about 1000 words.
Participating in this challenge has been an interesting learning experience, particularly the inevitable cutting of my 1500 word story down to the allowed 1000. I've discovered I really can't have more than three characters ("Out" nominally has four, but really only has two distinct characters, Amber and Other People) and am amassing a collection of outtakes from cut characters that I hope to mine for future stories. I definitely feel like they've gotten a little formulaic - character1 feels bad about something that can be shown in a few hundred words, then character2&3 say or do something that gives them some hope or comfort, yay - but given the constraint of trying to tell a complete story in a thousand words that fits some random prompt and works for people who have never seen the show, I'm not surprised that, having found something that more or less works, I've been clinging to it. ("Camp Victory, How Wonderful You Are" wasn't actually written for LAS but also fits the formula exactly.) I think part of the problem is that I'm very softhearted when it comes to these characters - I don't want to give them an unhappy ending or even a neutral ending, I want things to get *better* for them. Maybe if the show hadn't been canceled and they were getting some resolution in canon, I'd feel more comfortable kicking them in fic... or if more people were writing them. But if there's only one Amber story in the world, I can't, like, kill her off or something, she doesn't even have a backup copy!
Anyways. I also have a question, relating to archiving things at the AO3. Should I put up every last little random thing like my Lost episode tags, or should I only put up, I dunno how to put this, "major works"? Not that the LAS stuff is "major works" at all, but Lost actually has a fandom, whereas in Huge right now any scrap of text is still a significant chunk of the entire body of available fic. Thoughts?
