I'm getting a new computer! Unlike my previous hand-me-downs from Josh and Chaos, this one will be new out of the box and won't already have a name in their naming schemes. I want to name it after some loyal sidekick or companion - Samwise? Igor? Appa? (I think Josh is rooting for Appa - fast and white and big new disk that can carry a lot...) I can't actually make a poll but let's pretend:

- Samwise
- Igor
- Appa
- other

I think I like Appa, too, especially if you mod it to add unnecessary legs. Igor is good in that it implies madness and a certain durability beyond what nature intended. It also brings with it some amount of electrical baggage, not necessarily a positive thing for household appliances. (I'd suggest Theseus as another possibility, if you're planning to do partial hardware upgrades, but that's not really so good on the sidekick front.) Samwise and Igor both call to mind unfortunate social hierarchies and strange accents. Appa does remind one of upper respiratory problems and a certain degree of playing to the youngest common denominator.

I don't recommend Samwise -- after all, it does mean "half-wise", i.e. foolish.

Igor of course! Who better to assist a mad scientist. I suppose you could go with Scarface, but that might require a few modifications to the cover or LCD screen to be appropriate.

Chewbacca comes from "chew tobacco" (saw it in an interview for the first Star Wars that came out) so if you're looking at derivation, I wouldn't recommend that one. Ando? Pantalaimon? Sarah Jane (no good; your computer won't twist an ankle;-)
