I’m especially glad to see you mention the exclamation marks, because I noticed that too but told myself I was overreacting. :)
(I feel like exclamation marks in narration are something that happens all the time in picture books, but I don’t expect them in chapter books. But I also don’t have enough recent experience with kids’ books of any kind to be able to say that from an informed perspective.)
