Today, a special guest star! J returned some borrowed sparring pads to the kids' former karate teacher. (The older kid quit quite awhile ago; the younger kid quit this fall. Technically I guess we have said he is "taking a break" and who knows what will happen but as of now he's definitely not interested. Obviously we can't know what would have happened in the non-pandemic universe but I don't think either kid's enthusiasm really made the transfer from the dojo to zoom in the living room very well, even though kid 2 stuck it out much longer. (Or we gave him less choice, since he didn't have team sports he was wanting to switch over to.) (And it occurs to me I could put breakable things back on the mantel now that nobody is using nunchucks in the living room...))

I think we may actually have bought the sparring pads, not borrowed them; my admittedly vague recollection is that we concluded that it wasn't worth trying to recoup the cost, and letting the teacher give or lend or re-sell them, as she preferred, was fine by us. But maybe that's just what I was thinking, and we didn't actually talk about it, in which case I hope you agree in retrospect. :^ )
