I read the KC Davis book as well, and I felt like it would've been more useful back when our kids were in the baby/toddler stage and it really did feel like drowning. Now my house isn't unusable; I'm just dissatisfied with it.
(To Josh's point: we do a lot of "tzedakah-ing," convincing the kids to give up stuff for charity, and now that the kids are old enough to shop at thrift stores they're more amenable to the process. But we also have a long history of people in the house getting cranky when I try to give up things they haven't used in a long time. The box-it-away-for-a-while-and-see-if-you-miss-any-of-it technique might help.)
