Lore Olympus Volume One, Rachel Smythe. In theory I should be very excited that there was something on the Hugo Graphic Novel ballot that wasn't just the same old stuff! In practice I didn't get much out of this. I have read so many different versions of Greek mythology and I didn't really get any sense of what in particular Smythe is trying to say about these characters or stories. Maybe we just haven't gotten there yet - this is apparently "episodes 1-25" and the comic seems to be up to 199 online - but nothing here made me particularly interested in reading seven times more of it. And there's something very... same-y about all the character designs, like, I know that's unfair given that they're dramatically color-coded, but if they weren't color-coded, I'm not sure I could keep track of who was who, and I mostly can't tell who anyone is going to be before the comic names them despite extensive familiarity with the mythology. I dunno, maybe I need to read a review of it from someone who really loves it to open my eyes to what's great about it?
