Spoiler cut for Us: So, I watched this having read a thorough summary (here) which made it tolerable, but I can't say I enjoyed it. Get Out was so smart and cutting that it's hard to say how much I'm being biased by that, like, there is definitely a lot going on here about class, and reckoning with injustice, and what it means to escape or survive... but I sort of feel like it talked about a bunch of stuff but I'm not sure it actually said anything.
A space between these paragraphs, space space space.
Spoiler cut for thoughts about the whole ballot, although not my final ballot: So the real problem I have is that I actually enjoyed Avengers: Endgame way more than this movie, and yet it just feels wrong to rank Big Bucket O'Fanservice above Jordan Peele trying to do something new and interesting even if it doesn't entirely land. And yet I refuse to duty-vote a movie I duty-watched above a movie I actually had fun watching. So I could go back to not ranking anything in the bottom half of my ballot, except I would like to rank both Endgame and Us above Rise of Skywalker, which I continue to resent for being a Star Wars movie I didn't even enjoy. Blah. I'm also not entirely sure about my ranking of the top half... I'd really like to see Captain Marvel one more time before having to commit... argh.
Some links (mostly for my own convenience) to my posts about Captain Marvel (and I once ranked it second of the Marvel movies); Endgame (and more here), Rise of Skywalker (and more here), Good Omens, Russian Doll. I continue to think Good Omens will win so maybe it doesn't even matter, except that it does matter to me, I like feeling like I voted carefully and thoughtfully. Gah.
