Dune. Sure! That was definitely the first half of a Dune movie! I thought they did some nice stuff with scale, shots of ships and ships or ships and buildings, where you get a real sense of Impressive Space Future Infrastructure, but I honestly found The Big Sandworm Shot kind of underwhelming. It was very dark? Maybe it played better on the big screen in theaters? Anyways I do not really feel like there is any particular reason to see this movie other than to see what they did with it, but hey, not all media has to be emotionally moving.
I do want to say that the 80s movie had much better music though! I mean, the theme specifically. I really like a good, recognizable, memorable theme, and I guess that's maybe not what's "in" for movies any more? Which is fair - art evolves, we don't film like the screen is a stage any more, we moved credits to the end, if Themes sound cheesy or old-fashioned to the young people, of course they're not going to be used as much. But I miss them. Like, what was the last really good original movie theme? Pirates, in 2003? The Force Awakens Resistance theme (2015) is really good, but that seems like a special case since big dramatic symphonic themes were already established as part of the Star Wars brand, and I'm sure they knew they had to deliver on that especially when they were going so hard for nostalgia in other ways. I'm not saying there's nothing good at all in soundtracks any more, I just feel like every big soundtrack moment I can think of off the top of my head is either good usage of a pop song (or I guess in some cases a pop song composed specifically for the film - "What's Up Danger" seems to have been written specifically for Into the Spiderverse, and probably wins off the top of my head for musical moment of the decade) or a reference to something back from the Age of Themes (like the guitar version of the theme at the end of Terminator Dark Fate). Or use of something even older, like the Vivaldi at the end of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Or is in a movie that is also a musical, which is a different kind of thing.
(With some further research I have come up with How To Train Your Dragon, the first of which came out in 2010. That's a great theme.)
