Yuletide 2013 recs part two
Dec. 27th, 2013 01:33 pmTonight's theme, beloved books of my childhood.
Young Wizards - I was excited to see more Nita/Kit stories than what I consider the "secondary" cast of the more recent books (Carmela and Ronan and all of them). But the story I actually want to recommend first is Wizards in Winter, a crossover with Calvin and Hobbes. It's just perfect. Office Hours is about Dairine and Carl but is really about *wizardry* in the awesome way it works in these books. A Sturdy Foundation is similarly Nita doing a touching bit of wizardry. And, finally, for some actual Nita/Kit, Through Rain or Shine, Sleet or Snow is a shippy college futurefic.
Westing Game - It's Going to Be an Early Spring actually sounds like Turtle, which is tricky. The Theodorakis Guide to the Heirs of North America is Chris-POV, which is a fic the book needed (and Chris thinks some interesting things).
The Secret Garden - A Promise Only Wild Things Could Keep. Dickon-POV, in dialect, which I thought was rather ambitious, but it works, and there's some lovely imagery and character moments here.
Dark Is Rising - A Song of Fire, a nice little Bran/Will fixit. And And all the flowers that in the springtime grow is an interesting Will/Jane, not my favorite pairing, but a thoughtful take on Will's choices.
Circling back to Calvin and Hobbes again, Hello Operator, Please Give Me Number Nine is an amazing story in which Susie plays Calvinball with Death. This sort of thing is why we have Yuletide.
