Relevant to people nominating for the Hugos (by March 10th), one author's list of their favorite 2012 short fiction
Two other short stories I found memorable - and, hey, also sort of Valentine's-themey:
Love Might Be Too Strong A Word, by Charlie Jane Anders
Things Greater Than Love, Kate Bachus
A creepy mindfuck of a Harry Potter story, Evan Ames Rises Up.
Diane Duane writing fanfic about her own characters: Young Wizards OTP Challenge. There's something deeply bizarre about saying you don't like the actual author's version of her own characters, I mean, they are definitionally not out of character, and yet, something about Duane's contemporary writing totally fails to capture the magic of the Nita and Kit I fell in love with in the late 80s. (And I am not touching the New Millennium Editions with a ten-foot pole, until, I suppose, the inevitable crisis of one of my kids wanting to read them and which version are they going to have access to and gah. (Okay, yes, if either of my kids is actually into reading fantasy enough that they want to read Duane at all, I will already have won.))
