Project: How 'Bout This, Will It Grow?
Materials: two shriveled, many-eyed potatoes, toothpicks, plastic tubs
Explanatory details: Back in April I mentioned switching out my failed avocado pits for potatoes.
How did it go: Great! They totally sprouted! First a bunch of thready white roots and then stems and leaves! They've been living in the tubs for awhile, but today we planted them in an empty pot and I guess if they live we'll pile some more dirt around the stems and dig them up in September and see if there are any little tiny baby potatoes in there.
Things we talked about: They grew roots in the water and leaves in the air; when we planted them, we put the roots in the dirt and the leaves in the air.
What Junie got out of it: She enjoyed touching the roots and leaves (also digging up the dirt for planting).
