Last night Junie asked for "be like swid" as a bedtime song, as she often does, so I sang it a few times. And she started echoing some of the words, as she sometimes does lately, and then even after we finished night-night songs and said goodnight, she was still chanting "beemoth of deep, shelf too steep" for a long time after. And then at one point she broke off and announced "it's coming up!". So if the Kraken is spotted swimming up the Mystic, you know who to blame...

Project: What is Snow? part II
Materials: jar of melted snow, sub-freezing temperatures
Explanatory details: We left the jar outside overnight and brought it in this morning
How did it go: Ok. Junie did not seem all that interested at first, but she tried dropping the rock on top of the ice and saw it not sink, so I think she's still curious about that, and she is now sticking her hand in the jar to touch the ice.
Things we talked about: The melted snow did not turn back into snow, it turned into ice. Water in a container freezes into ice; water turns into snow up in the sky. Ice is cold, and you can't stick your hand in it the way you can in water or snow.
What Junie got out of it: I made her a tub of water for some more sink or float, and she did some side-by-side exploration of the water and the ice. I didn't fill the water tub quite as far and she discovered that she could get the finger crayon to stand up on the bottom rather than float sideways, which she thought was interesting.
