Feb. 6th, 2003 09:29 pmWas chatting with my mom about Buffy just now, and she asked me if I thought "this whole thing with Willow being gay" was "to try to get gays to watch the show" or if I thought it was "for the guys, because guys go for that kind of thing". "Gee", I said, "Maybe it's an interesting storyline for them to explore with the character." "Well," my mom said, "You know there's always another reason for these things, for demographics; who do you think they're trying to appeal to?" "I think all sorts of people might appreciate it," I said.
Alternate answer: "Me, mom. I think they put it in to appeal to me. Because, Willow? *Really* cute. And Willow and Tara? Pretty hot, at least in the very few episodes I've seen with them. What's not to like? Now I'm just hoping Xander will fool around with Andrew already."
Sigh. I'm pretty sure I've had conversations with my mother in which I've gently advanced the notion that, really, wouldn't it be much more interesting if Harry got together with Draco instead of Hermione. I *thought* things like "don't you think Kirk and Spock are secretly in love with each other?" had been mentioned, even if I've been shying away from terms like "homoerotic subtext" and "I read gay porn". Although I suppose it doesn't follow that just because I like boys with boys I'd like girls with girls... after all, that's "for the guys", right? Meh. I guess I missed a good opportunity to clue my mom in on some of my, er, diverser tastes in celebrity ogling, but she clearly had a "straight woman to straight woman, we can see through this advertising ploy" thing going, and it just didn't seem like the time for "actually, mom, I shop the cheesecake aisle *and* the beefcake aisle." (Hmm, and now I want to go read Spike/Willow...)
