Interestingly, Paterson is the second blind person to serve as governor of a U.S. state -- Bob C. Riley served as acting governor of Arkansas for 11 days in 1975.
He's also only the fourth black governor of a U.S. state, following Deval Patrick, Douglas Wilder of Virginia, and P. B. S. Pinchback, who served as governor of Louisiana for 35 days in 1872-3.
