book rec: Embassytown

China Mieville writes science fiction! This book was really, really good, possibly my favorite thing of his I've read. If you're not already sold, it reminded me very much of Octavia Butler, specifically (highlight to read, is spoilery) Octavia Butler's Amnesty crossed with Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, but with Mieville's own obsessions (the city, of course).

Note that white-on-white text only works for people who are reading LJ in your style. :>) (Fortunately, i haven't read the other books you mentioned either, so it wasn't much of a spoiler.)

Just discussed this with Josh. I maintain that 90% of people read on white and the other 10% are weirdos. Of course now I have two non-white-background data points and none others since nobody who it does work for is going to bother to mention it...

My page background is white, but the text showed up gray (and in a non-serif font).

I could get that up to +a lot if I include my RP journals. A *lot* of the LJ canned layouts are at least a little colorful.

Highlight to read:

can you see me now?

and that is <p bgcolor="white"><font color=white></font></p>

Also, it sounds like a fun book from the description. :)

My computer color calibration is sucky, so my pale blue highlighting barely revealed anything.

Ok, just piling on there. Thanks for the rec! If I ever get through my latest pile, I might add it to the next one... (Catching up with some LeGuin and Lahiri at present, among other things.)

Ooh. It sounds like I should read that.
