taking the asshole discount
Extremely late to work today, but seem to be getting away with it since no one else is here at all.
Detoured through Macy's to look for Christmas cards and ended up finding a couple things. Got rather frustrated at register when salesclerk argued that I must have been mistaken about the *large red sign reading "additional 50% off"* on a certain rack because everything in the holiday department was already 60% off and "that would be 110%, we'd be giving you ten back". Did not really want to argue my theory that "additional 50%" on a 60% discount is equivalent to paying 20% of the tag price, especially when there were about a dozen people in line, so I cut off his "there are no additional discounts, lady" monologue and told him to forget about it. He then rang up a $20 item as $10. I think he could see it in my eyes that I was about to inquire as to how that constituted a 60% discount, and so hastily hit the "transaction discount" button, giving me 20% off on the entire purchase. Which ended up being *less* than I should have paid... Macy's can just consider it the cost of hiring people who a) have no idea what signs are up in their own department and b) cannot do math.
