I think Byatt's Frederica Potter books have some really interesting stuff about women in science, and also a fascinating romance structure (it's rare to see a book where characters are genuinely in love, it doesn't work out, and they figure out how to move on), but they're a pretty serious investment in time and emotion.

I would vote for Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley next, in this imaginary book club.
